On August 14th, nearly 30 Synergy members tuned in for a focused, high-impact webinar on A2L refrigerants led by John and Chris from Chemours. With looming EPA regulations and a major market transition away from R-410A, the goal was simple: get the facts straight and equip contractors with what they need to know now.
Why A2Ls Matter
Due to environmental regulations, R-410A is being phased out in favor of A2L refrigerants like R-32 and R-454B. These new refrigerants offer a much lower global warming potential (GWP) – R-454B comes in under 500 compared to R-410A’s ~2,000—but they’re also classified as “mildly flammable.” That’s led to confusion in the field about safety, compatibility, and servicing.
Key Takeaways from the Webinar:
-
Safety + Storage: A2Ls are safe when handled properly. There have been no reported fire events globally. Storage limits have increased dramatically – up to 20,000 pounds without sprinklers.
-
Training + Certification: No new certification is required beyond EPA 608, but techs must understand cylinder adapters, leak sensors, and new labeling.
-
Service Equipment: Most existing tools will still work, but make sure they’re rated for A2Ls. Vehicles can transport up to 440 pounds without special DOT compliance.
-
No Retrofits: R-410A systems cannot be retrofitted to A2Ls. Reclamation of R-410A will be critical after 2029.
-
Supply Chain: Supply issues with R-454B are improving as manufacturers ramp up packaging and production. Chemours expects strong availability through 2026.
The Bottom Line
This transition is happening now, and our members are in a prime position to lead the way with clear communication, technician readiness, and a firm grasp of best practices.
A big thank-you to our speakers, John and Chris, and to all who joined us live. If you missed it, the recording and slides have been shared with attendees. Be sure to check your inbox or check out OneHub to watch the recorded webinar.
