The latest Synergy HR Peer Group call centered on one of the most pressing challenges facing organizations today: building a clear, sustainable path for people to grow, develop, and eventually transition leadership responsibilities.
Much of the conversation focused on succession planning and career development. Members shared how standardizing job descriptions and clearly defining role expectations can create consistency across teams while giving employees a better understanding of what growth actually looks like. Rather than vague career ladders, the emphasis was on measurable accountabilities, skills, and behaviors that support advancement over time.
Another key theme was having honest conversations about career progression. HR leaders discussed the importance of transparency when an employee’s interests or traits don’t align with a future role. Instead of over-promising advancement, the group talked about framing these conversations around development, training opportunities, and finding roles that better match individual strengths. When handled well, these discussions can open new paths rather than shut doors.
The group also explored talent assessment and leadership readiness, including ways to evaluate both performance and potential. Structured tools help HR teams identify high performers, future leaders, and employees who need additional support, making leadership development more intentional instead of reactive.
Finally, the conversation turned to retirement planning and recognition. HR leaders shared real-world experiences managing delayed retirements, phased transitions, and creative ways to honor long-tenured employees.
Synergy’s HR Peer Group continues to be a place where HR leaders can talk openly about the challenges they face and learn from others who are navigating similar situations.
